Every author dreams of visiting schools to encourage reading and writing in the children they meet – encouraging them to become the voices of tomorrow and helping them find inspiration in poetry and prose.
Over the years, I have been lucky enough to run crazy, creative writing enrichments in schools and clubs where children have gone on quests to find Phoenix eggs, travelled to Proxima B to save Earth from the monstrous Morgellons (enjoying a live webchat with engineers from the National Space Centre as part of the experience), and created kites to make their words fly. I have seen children from different age groups become wizards with prose and grow in confident when crafting poetic verse through carefully designed lesson plans that give every child an opportunity to shine, no matter his/her/their ability.
The EDS Writers Club is currently running an after school club for Year 2, 3, 4 and 5 at Crown Wood Primary School in Bracknell, Berkshire. The sessions run on Monday and Wednesday during the term time. We have over 17 students participating in the club and most of the year 4’s and 5’s have won places in the Young Writers competition for their stories to be published in an anthology coming out later this year.
